Oxandrolone is a hormone derived from DHT (dihydrotestosterone) that has had its chemical structure altered to increase its anabolic power and so that it can be used orally.

Its initial purpose in medicine was to help with weight gain in patients who had undergone surgery, infections, burns or any situation that involved severe weight loss.

Oxandrolone was even used in children with slow growth. Of course, the dosage used for therapeutic purposes was several times lower than that used by bodybuilders for aesthetic purposes.

Its best-known commercial name was Anavar, a name that several supplement companies steal to this day to try to create fantasy products that promise the same effects as the real hormone – don't fall for it, real oxandrolone being sold as Anavar does not exist here and supplements with the same name have no relation to the hormone.

Expected effects of using oxandrolone

Oxandrolone improves nitrogen retention in the muscle which, in a nutshell, prevents muscle mass loss and promotes an anabolic environment in the body; it reduces SHBG which in turn increases the amount of testosterone that is free to be used by the body.

It also inhibits glucocorticoid hormones such as cortisol, which can reduce muscle mass loss; it also increases red blood cell production, improving oxygenation and muscle performance (read: muscle strength).

One peculiarity of oxandrolone is that, in addition to its anabolic effects, it is one of the few steroids that directly promotes fat loss. Without going into overly technical details, this is because oxandrolone can make thyroid hormones, such as T3, more widely used by the body.

This steroid also does not aromatize, meaning it is not converted into estrogen and does not cause related side effects. In short, oxandrolone does not cause gynecomastia, fluid retention or increased blood pressure.

Because of this, muscle mass gains with oxandrolone are always lean and can be maintained more easily after the cycle (compared to other anabolic steroids). It is useful in both muscle mass gain and fat loss cycles.

How much muscle mass you can gain with oxandrolone is very subjective. Gains can range from 2kg to 7kg (with a lot of optimism). Diet, training, experience level and dosage will all be factors that will heavily influence this amount.

Oxandrolone is also slightly androgenic, causing little or no virilization in women (enlargement of the clitoris, change in voice and general masculine traits).

It’s good to keep in mind that while oxandrolone is a “safe” drug, it is also one of the weakest. Expect noticeable improvements, but don’t expect to turn your physique around with oxandrolone alone.

Men typically use 30 to 100 mg of oxandrolone per day for 4-6 weeks. While women use 10 to 30 mg per day for the same amount of time. The cycle is as simple as it sounds.
